Synopsis:
Locked in the dungeons underneath the High Cathedral in the Holy City Lordentia, the Spirit Wolf Fenrir cries out for his Saint. For centuries, he has waited for the rebirth of his master. But now she is close. He would recognise her scent anywhere. Can Fenrir escape his captor’s torments to warn the Saint of the danger? And what will he do when he learns that she’s not a Saint at all, but just a passing Beast Tamer? Can he possibly learn to get along with this ridiculous furball calling himself the King of Demons? Kanata threw away the title of Saint to lead the freewheeling life of a Beast Tamer in search of fluffy critters, and now that she’s saved the city a few times and broken the Goddess’s curse, she’s ready to head out on her adventure! But the wickedness of the Church and their false Goddess is greater than she knows. Not that it bothers her! The open road is ahead, and the fluff awaits! What else could possibly matter? The Saint Gains Another Fluff of Legendary Proportions!
In the second volume following our saintly beast tamer, Kanata’s fluff radar goes off at full force as they run into Fenrir who’s found himself dead centre of a fake saint’s evil schemes and a religion’s corrupt ways.
Our favourite series full of fluff and stupid misunderstandings returns as Kanata and Zaggy finally set forth on their adventuring journey to find more fluffy creatures. It isn’t long before Kanata gets her wish as shortly into their journey they end up coming across the spirit wolf Fenrir, currently in his small fluffy form, captured by a bunch of goblins. Fenrir ended up in this precarious situation after deciding to warn his true fated master of the plans of the so called fake saint and the religion as a whole. In order to escape from them, he creates himself a small fluffy body with an equally small amount of magic and strength to match and runs away to find his fated saint and warn her.
Misunderstanding are abound once again as Fenrir decides to form a beast tamer bond between himself and Kanata, leading to a cute name change to Fen-Fen and an adherence towards the values of fluff, which both Zaggy and Fen-Fen mistakenly believe is a measure of strength. This volume also sees the levels of fluff sky rocket. With another beast by her side, finally, Kanata can achieve her dream of being sandwiched on both sides by astronomical levels of fluff, whilst readers will likely melt at the overwhelming number of cute and heartwarming scenes. The introduction of Fen-Fen also leads to some nice comedic character moments alongside Zaggy. At the beginning of the novel, neither Zaggy or Fen-Fen have a particular liking towards one another, likely stemming from the jealousy felt when Kanata showers one of them with praise. These are always fun little scenes that usually has Kanata looking at them sweetly as they cutely argue with one another. Of course their arguments don’t last for long as there’s always one thing that brings them both together, protection of their master Kanata. Kanata also gets a really nice interaction part when she meets her hero, the author behind the beast tamer books that she read so avidly as a child. These heartwarming moments are a good glimpse as to Kanata’s obsession with fluffy creatures even as a young child.
As in the previous volume, there are several major threats that hang over the trio, or I would say that if they could ever even come close to Kanata’s overwhelming strength. For the majority of the volume, the main threat hanging over the trio comes from the actions of the fake saint and the unending corruption faced within the countries main religion. Whilst the angel from the previous volume seems to have learnt her lesson, it seems that other’s within the religious organisation need some convincing. With Kanata solving a number of undesirable adventurer requests as well as saving the religious capital from a seemingly unstoppable threat, Kanata ends up being treated as a Saint and worshiped under the banner of fluffism. With the change in public opinion and the fake saint’s complete change in personality after the incident, the main religion ends up changing its corrupt ways. The final antagonist in the second volume, returns towards Lucy’s debt woes and Vigo who’s trying to take her magical kiln. This plot line culminates in an unfair duel in which Kanata can’t participate in leading to Melissa and Zaggy taking on the fight.
Overall, the second volume of Passing Beast Tamer continues to build on the cute and fluffy scenes that you’ve come to love in the first volume going further by adding new characters and character dynamics as well as a host of new antagonists for Kanata and her fluffy beasts to steam roll. It’s just a shame that this could be the last volume we ever see of the series given that it hasn’t had a new volume in two years.
