Synopsis:
Mary Regalia’s motto is to live a plain, uneventful life, but no matter what she does, she can’t seem to help drawing the attention of everyone at the academy. Desperate to find a quiet place to spend her free time, she tries to stake out a room in the old campus building…but it’s haunted?! Or so the rumors say—but even if the scuttlebutt’s nothing more than a phantom of the students’ imaginations, the faculty is forbidding anyone from going inside until they can get to the bottom of it. Can Mary unveil the truth behind the specter haunting her plans? Or does she only have a ghost of a chance of enjoying the quiet life she seeks? (J-Novel Club)
The Invincible Lady Creates a Festival!
Mary’s academy life continues in the second volume as she finds herself in a whole host of new troubles as part of the Aleyios class. Mainly focusing on issues pertaining to the newly formed student body, this volume features three main stories. The first covers spooky goings-on in the old school building, the second sees Mary fight against pheromones, and the third fulfils Mary’s past life wish of going to a festival.
The Invincible Lady Strikes Again
Comedically, Mary’s fight against love pheromones is the strongest of the bunch. In typical Regalia fashion, an inspection of club activities goes south when they discover a group of student researchers experimenting on Mandrakes. An investigation full of mishaps later – Mary has been dowsed with a Mandrakes love pheromones, and another Mandrake is on the run.
Now, given that Mary’s abilities are already maxed out, including her beauty, it doesn’t take a genius to see just how much trouble she’ll cause running after a Mandrake through the school, giving off love signals left, right and centre. A hilarious scene unfolds with Mary’s efforts being hampered at every opportunity by love confessions and those with sweetheart eyes.
I do like the added detail the author gives during this story regarding Tutte, Mary’s maid. She’s the only one unaffected by the Mandrake’s powers – having acclimatised to Mary’s cuteness through the years.
A Festival in Another World
Mary’s festival dreams constitutes the more important story of the volume. It once again puts Mary’s slow life tightrope walk on display – unable to juggle the wish for the event to do well and trying (and failing) not to stand out.
Added to this inner conflict is the knowledge that the queen will attend the festival. Both she and the leader of the demons make for interesting characters to add to the series. The queen’s clearly a schemer, and Mary’ll have to watch out if she’s to continue living under the radar. Meanwhile, the demon’s leader is childish, and the interplay between the two royals is something to behold.
As for the festival itself, it makes for a great vehicle in which to add depth to the series’ combat and world-building. One of the main ideas for the festival is an exhibition match featuring members of the solos and aleyios classes. Developing new fighting strategies where both knights and mages can fight in tandem is commendable and will cement these characters in the country’s history.
However, not everything at the festival is fun and games. Credible threats have been made, and suspicious characters are hanging around the area. To make sure everything goes smoothly, another one of Mary’s roles is to head up a security team.
There is a threat to the campus, but they are put to bed pretty quickly. The main highlight of this section belongs to the creation of communication magic. Bringing influences from her previous and new lives, her technique makes the security team’s mission a success and achieves her goal of remaining on the sidelines.
Overall, The Invincible Little Lady’s second volume continues to be a mixture of good comedy, interesting characters and a nice little sprinkling of world-building on top. The introduction of the Queen alongside Mary’s newfound achievements by the end of the volume spells more interesting times for the characters ahead.
