Yet again, trouble finds Yuki and disrupts his idyllic life! Yuki’s boisterous new life as a demon lord in a fantasy world continues. One day, while he and his pets are hunting monsters to refill the dungeon’s rapidly depleting coffers, he abruptly runs into Lew’s father. “Give me back my daughter!” the man roars angrily, and misunderstandings lead to him challenging Yuki to a duel. How is our antihero supposed to deal with this hairy development?! In the meantime, Nell, Yuki’s second wife, decides to return to the royal capital as part of her duties as a hero. Yuki means to accompany her as her bodyguard, but an unexpected incident disrupts that plan—someone sets a wild stampede in motion against them. A Demon Lord’s Trouble in Paradise!

…And Lew Makes Three

Now reaching its sixth volume, the series is finally making good use of its harem tag. Nell’s confession seems to have opened the floodgates, and it isn’t long before the series’ titular demon lord is asking the question – if you can have two wives, why not make it a triple?

Key to Yuki obtaining his third wife starts with the series answering a very important question in universe – who was affected by the dungeon member’s sudden disappearance? For most, this isn’t much of a problem as either their family is long gone or they didn’t have one in the first place. For Lew, however, she’s never been as straightforward about her past as the others have, and it’s about to come back to bite her when her family visits the dungeon.

This pack of wolfmen signal to cause no end of trouble for Yuki and Lew, but thanks to Yuki’s gift of the gab, they are contented to go home once Yuki and Lew become betrothed.

Family Dynamics

With Yuki now blessed with a third wife, a good part of this latest instalment focuses on the entire family getting closer together. These are expressed through slice-of-life adventures, and while they aren’t particularly prescient to the plot, they offer interesting insight into the family dynamics of the dungeon. Unsurprisingly, respect within Yuki’s dungeon is gained depending on how good at games you are.

These sections also provide some much-needed info about the only adult member of the dungeon not engaged with Yuki, Leila. From her observant perspective, it’s easily gleaned that Yuki may end up getting a fourth wife in the not-too-distant future.

The Kingdom Needs a Hero

Ending out the volume, the series turns away from the fun and games to focus on a more serious plot line beginning to develop. The kingdom closest to the dungeon is once again under the influence of malicious scheming, and the higher-ups have called on Nell to help.

Whilst the antagonists here aren’t anything out of the ordinary, this plot line gives ample opportunity for Nell to think about her future, one which Yuki is all too happy to help with.

Not as plot-heavy as its predecessors, Now I’m a Demon Lord’s latest volume has used its downtime wisely to develop the already-established characters in the dungeon.

This focus on family dynamics is mostly centred around Lew and Nell. From their ambitions to loves, this volume provides interesting new angles to their characters.

Overall, Now I’m a Demon Lord’s sixth volume makes for a strong outing for the series.
