Synopsis:
Life hasn’t been kind to Zenos. He was born in the slums, and his dirt-poor background has denied him almost every opportunity. After an encounter with a healer, he throws himself into studying to become one and finally catches a break when an adventurer invites Zenos into his party. Zenos is thrilled—so thrilled, in fact, that he’s willing to put up with his teammates treating him like garbage. They fail to appreciate his talents and ultimately kick him to the curb, claiming he’s outlived his usefulness to them. Now bereft of money and out of options, Zenos decides to put his self-taught skills to use elsewhere and opens an underground clinic. Word quickly spreads about the brilliant healer working incredible magic in the city’s shadowy underbelly. Even the royal palace is taking notice… Can Zenos buck the odds and carve out a life for himself in a world that’s spit in his face? And can he save the lives of the patients who wind up on his doorstep in the process? (Source: J-Novel Club)
Adventurer, Healer, and Leader of the Slums!
Visitors to the Doctor’s Surgery
Written by Sakaku Hishikawa and illustrated by Daburyu, the focus of my reviewing blog turns to The Brilliant Healer’s New Life in the Shadows. A new series soon to be released digitally on JNC follows a healer who’s started to make waves.
The main star in JNC’s newest healing adventure is Zenos. An adventurer originally from the slums, his life is dealt yet another curveball when the adventuring party he is a part of kicks him out. With no money and nowhere to go, Zenos returns to his roots. Putting his healing skills to use, he opens an underground surgery with little inkling as to the sort of profound effects he’ll have on the region.
Mixing a typical banishment story alongside fluffy and light slice-of-life adventures, these types of light novels can have strengths that come from all different directions. In The Brilliant Healer’s case, its main highlight comes from the cast of colourful characters it supports.
As Zenos sets up his surgery in the slums, he is inevitably visited by a host of side characters either looking for treatment or just coming in for a quick chat. From elves, ogres, royal knights and even wraiths, there’s no shortage of interesting people to meet. Carmilla and Krishna are personal favourites from the first volume. Carmilla for her constant teasing and commentary over the doctor’s potential romantic relationships, and Krishna for her never-ending list of one weaknesses.
A Man Who’ll Shift Nations
For the main plot of the volume, the first in the series focuses on the undeniable change Zenos brings to the slums.
As an overpowered healer, Zenos’s abilities almost bring an end to severe injuries and death. As a result, the gangs in the slums see little reason to continue fighting and instead focus on improving living conditions and the area’s overall image.
It isn’t long before people and the kingdom begin to take notice. Whilst this newfound attention brings people with both good and bad intentions, Zenos’ influence has an overall positive effect. With his new underground surgery, Zenos can find purpose and the opportunity to change kingdoms.
Overall, The Brilliant Healer’s New Life in the Shadows makes for an excellent addition to the ever-growing list of fluffy, slice-of-life adventure series to be found on the J-Novel Club website.
What stands out most about this latest addition is its colourful cast of characters. From meddling wraiths to flawed royal knights, these side characters add vibrancy to the world and a good reason to come back and see what they’ll be up to next.
