Within a similar-looking corridor, only this time dead quiet, the whirr of infinite possibilities known as the TARDIS landed just out of sight. From its stately blue exterior, the voices of two women could be heard inside. The first voice came from someone excitable and full of energy.
“White sandy beaches, crystal-clear oceans, and a chorus of space dolphins lulling you to sleep every night. I’m telling you, Yaz, the shores of Calastrion are exactly what we need!” There was a slight pause.
“I’m not so sure, Doctor.” Given the number of misadventures that had happened because of the Doctor’s best-laid plans, it was only natural for Yaz to be apprehensive about such a perfect-sounding place.
“Come on, Yaz, a little break now and then will do us good, especially after everything that’s happened recently. A little relaxation on Calastrion is going to be brilliant!”
Stepping out of the TARDIS first, Yaz wasn’t the least bit surprised when the beach holiday the Doctor promised her was nowhere to be found. Instead, she found herself amongst the all-too-familiar setting of a bland space-age corridor, albeit this one was immaculately clean and polished.
“Doctor, I think the TARDIS took a wrong turn again.”
“Nonsense! The TARDIS always takes us to where we need to be… Ah…” Now getting to have a look around herself, the Doctor noticed that this indeed was not the shores of Calastrion.
“Doctor, where are we?” Yaz hoped that the Doctor knew the answers.
Looking around, the Doctor began to answer…
“An early Earth colony.” She then moved quickly towards one of the corridor walls and curiously began to sniff it.
“*Sniff* *Sniff* From the smell of the wall, I’d say it’s definitely one of the outer colonies in the late 25th to the early 28th centuries.” She then ran her sonic screwdriver across the wall just to make sure. “Yep, definitely an outer colony.”
“Doctor, you can tell all that just by smelling the wall?”
“You can tell a lot from smelling walls, you know. If you sniff in just the right spot…” The Doctor dragged Yaz over to a point on the lower half of the wall. “You can pick up a slight lemon-y scent coming from the re-used spaceship parts, a characteristic of colony building during those centuries.”
“Can you smell it, Yaz?” She shook her head dejectedly. “Huh, maybe it’s only Time Lords who have the strong olfactory senses for that.”
