With Will’s investigations taking a backseat to the dream duo of Amanda and Evelyn last episode, the latest episode, “Push, Jump, Fall,” finds Will and Faith firmly back in the driver’s seats as they go on a manhunt at a Black Rodeo.
One of the story’s two main narratives, their investigation into a potential fugitive, reveals a family-friendly institution rife with criminality and corruption. Uncovering everything from drug smuggling to rape, the plot follows a more serious tone compared to the light-hearted robbery caper from the previous episode.
Despite some initial interesting character insights into Faith’s less-than-comfortable attitude towards camping and Will’s attempts at alternative therapies, the story struggles to scale the Black Rodeo’s drug operation. The episode’s focus on two perpetrators ultimately undermines the narrative of a wider, sophisticated smuggling operation that utilises the rodeo’s horses as a means of transporting the supplies.

Ormewood and Angie’s storyline, meanwhile, has the two of them embroiled in an apparent suicide mystery. Arguably the stronger of the episode’s two plots, it spends most of its runtime focusing on the open conversations between Angie and Ormewood as they attempt to decipher whether their victim jumped, fell, or was pushed.
These heart-to-heart scenes are especially beneficial to the development of Ormewood’s ongoing battle with his brain tumour. In a rare moment of vulnerability, he admits to Angie about how scared he is of the unknown and how frightened he is about how his kids will react to his serious prognosis. Despite his worst fears, his conversation with Max and Cooper works out for the best.

Angie’s development, however, isn’t so promising. Despite showing signs that last episode’s relapse was a momentary blip, by the end, it is very clear that she’s beginning to spiral once again. Her mother’s passing has caused major trauma to resurface, and at this point, it is unclear who or what will be able to break her out of this cycle.
Weaker than last episode’s packed offering, “Push, Jump, Fall” is an inevitable lull after several season highs. Despite an interesting premise, Will and Faith’s investigation into the criminal underbelly of the Black Rodeo never truly captures the correct scale for a sophisticated drug smuggling operation. Moreover, Angie and Ormewood’s frank discussions don’t do enough to save the episode from filler status.
My Rating: 6/10
